Crickets

Sometimes confused with a grasshopper, because of the similar body structure and behavior, crickets are (mostly) nocturnal insects; often discovered living beneath rocks/logs in fields and along roadsides.

Although considered harmless to humans, exterminating staff have warned that crickets have powerful jaws; and have been known to bite people. However unlikely this pest is to breakthrough human skin, a cricket bite is considered painful when inflicted on sensitive areas; such as the webbing between fingers and toes.

Considered an omnivorous scavenger, the cricket feeds on organic material, decaying plants, fungi, and (some) seedling plants. On occasion, crickets have been known to eat their own dead, when no other food is available.

  1. Commonly considered a pest control problem, and a general nuisence because of their song(s), many homeowners are eager to contact a local exterminator; to resolve their noisy pest problem.

  2. Although a bite from a cricket is hardly cause for concern, some homeowners and tenants are quick to call in pest control services; when they've had enough of the cricket's songs.
