Velvet Ant

Surprising to most, Velvet ants are actually wasps. This deceptive insect is usually about one inch in length and covered with long bright colored hairs, ranging from red to orange, to yellow to white; or a combination of several colors.

The Velvet ant female has no wings and closely resembles a large ant. Because their painful sting is said to be able to “kill a cow,” this pest is sometimes referred to a “cow killer.” As such, the possibility of a painful attack from a female Velvet ant, is often enough to prompt homeowners; to contact local pest control professionals for help.

The males of the species are somewhat smaller, and do not have a stinger. However, the male Velvet ant does have a set of well developed wings, which it uses to accomplish flight.
