The Red Fire Ant

The Red Fire Ant was accidentally introduced into the United States in 1929, when a cargo ship that had used soil as ballast; arrived in Mobile, Alabama from South America.

Red Fire Ants live in communities and depend on one another to gather food, help build the nest, raise/care for the young, and protection from predators and local pest control. Without the support of the colony, a single Fire Ant could not survive.

Red Fire Ants will aggressively invade homes, yards, fields and parks, eating (almost) any plant or animal material; including other insects. A Red Fire Ant invasion can damage crops and electrical equipment, resulting in billions of dollars per year; in repairs, pest control and exterminator costs.
